The Davenport Historic District in the city of Davenport, Iowa is a wonderful glimpse into the history of this vibrant Midwestern city. This district was established in 1975 and is comprised of several blocks in the downtown area. The district is home to numerous buildings that were built between 1855 and 1930 and are a testament to the city's strong architectural heritage. It encompasses many styles popular during that period such as Italianate, Romanesque Revival, Tudor Revival, Classical Revival, and Gothic Revival.
This area also showcases some of Davenport's finest examples of cast iron architecture including two historic warehouses located on First Street. The historic district contains more than 90 contributing properties in total such as churches, schools, residences, commercial buildings, and warehouses. These include City Hall which was originally constructed in 1891 by the renowned architect J.L. Cochrane; the Townsend Building which dates back to 1895; along with several other notable landmarks throughout the district.
Aside from its importance as an architectural treasure trove, the Davenport Historic District is also known for its many cultural events throughout the year.
