Fort Gaines on Dauphin Island is a historical fortification situated on the eastern tip of the island, where it stands as a reminder of an important Civil War battle. Built in 1821 and named after General Edmund Pendleton Gaines, Fort Gaines is one of the few forts along the coast that was able to withstand a siege during the Civil War. The fort played an instrumental role in protecting Mobile Bay from Federal control. During the Battle of Mobile Bay in August 1864, Confederate Major General Franklin Gardner ordered Admiral David Farragut's Union fleet to surrender at Fort Gaines. After five days of continuous bombardment by Union ships, Farragut surrendered and evacuated his troops. Today, visitors can explore the remains of Fort Gaines and view its collection of artifacts including cannonballs, shells, guns and other relics from the battle. The fort also features interpretive exhibits detailing its history as well as educational activities for children such as interactive games and living history demonstrations. As part of the Gulf Coast region's rich military heritage, Fort Gaines offers a unique opportunity to understand how events during this era shaped our world today.
