USS Lexington, Corpus Christi, TX
The USS Lexington is a unique historical landmark located in the city of Corpus Christi , Texas. This impressive aircraft carrier was the sixth US Navy ship to bear the name "Lexington" and served during World War II from 1943-1946. It's one of four surviving Essex Class carriers from the era and since 1972 it has acted as a museum ship located along Corpus Christi Bay.
The vessel was initially built in Quincy, Massachusetts and commissioned on February 17th, 1943 prior to being sent to sea. During WWII, it participated in several major engagements such as the Battle of Coral Sea and the Battle of Midway, where it earned eleven battle stars for its service before being decommissioned and placed in reserve in 1947. The USS Lexington was eventually brought to Corpus Christi in late 1969 and opened up as a museum in 1972 after undergoing extensive repairs and reconstructions.
Today, visitors can walk around aboard this majestic vessel while learning about its history and role during WWII. There are numerous interactive activities available, including wearing uniforms from that era or posing for photos at different stops inside the ship's corridors. Additionally, there are two flight simulators on board that let guests experience what it would be like to be an aviator during a mission over enemy lines. Other attractions include simulated battle stations where visitors can launch torpedoes or test their skills with a variety of weapons used at that time. Finally, "The Blue Ghost" cafe allows visitors to relax after exploring this incredible piece of history while enjoying an array of snacks and drinks.
