Selena Memorial Statue, Corpus Christi, TX
Selena Memorial Statue in Corpus Christi is a monument dedicated to the memory of the late Tejano music star, Selena Quintanilla-Perez. Located in her hometown of Corpus Christi, Texas, it stands as a tribute to the singer’s legacy and a reminder of her beloved presence. The statue was commissioned by the City of Corpus Christi and sculpted by the late Octavio Medellin, a renowned Mexican-American artist. Standing 8 feet tall and weighing 1,800 pounds, this bronze sculpture features Selena wearing an iconic purple jumpsuit adorned with glittery appliques. Her right arm is raised up while her left hand points toward her famous fans in admiration. Adorned with stars that represent a symbolic key to success, this bronze memorial also serves to inspire future generations of musicians.
The unveiling ceremony for the Selena Memorial Statue took place on October 17th 2017 at Shoreline Boulevard in downtown Corpus Christi. The event was attended by thousands of people who all gathered together to celebrate the life and legacy of the beloved singer. For weeks prior to unveiling day fans had been flocking from across the world showing their love for Selena with flowers, artworks and even tattoos dedicated to her memory. During the ceremony speakers included Mayor Joe McComb, Latin Grammy winner Fito Olivares as well as Suzette Quintanilla (Selena’s sister). Additionally several local high school bands performed covers of Selena's greatest hits along with other inspirational songs such as “We are family” and “Reach for the stars”. Today this memorial serves not only as a celebration of cultural heritage but also as a reminder that through determination one can achieve dreams no matter where they come from or what language they speak.
