Born to Fly mural, Corpus Christi, TX
The Born to Fly mural in Corpus Christi, Texas is a stunningly beautiful piece of public art. Located in the heart of the city, it serves as a reminder of the importance of exploration, creativity, and community. The mural was created by local artist and muralist Eligio Fernandez Jr., who has been painting murals in the area for over 30 years. The design is based on his own childhood dreams of flying and exploration, and consists of vibrant images of airplanes and hot-air balloons with an array of colors that fill the sky.
The scale of the project is quite large, consisting of two colossal walls measuring 14ft x 28ft each. It can be seen from a distance and really stands out against its backdrop. In addition to its captivating visuals, the mural also offers an important message of hope and resilience for all those who see it – even during difficult times. The title ‘Born To Fly’ is meant to symbolize how we can all take flight if we only believe in ourselves and strive towards our dreams no matter what obstacles life throws our way.
Throughout this piece there are several other elements that add even more texture to its narrative: strands of colorful ribbons flowing throughout with butterflies scattered about; an abstracted face representing strength amidst chaotic clouds; stars dotting both walls as symbols for reaching greater heights beyond what we know; pink banners proclaiming freedom; a large word bubble that reads “I Believe” in elegant script font; and various birds that symbolize unity among us all – providing further insight into the diverse perspectives found amongst cultures here in South Texas.
Since its completion, the Born to Fly mural has become a popular location for locals to come together in celebration or contemplation alike. It invites us to pause for a moment, take notice, reflect upon one another’s stories and experiences - offering us solace during difficult times while reminding us never to stop reaching for our goals regardless what challenges arise along our journey.
