Historic Corolla Park in Corolla is a place where visitors can experience the beauty of nature on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The park, located on the northernmost end of the Outer Banks, features more than 1,000 acres of sandy beaches and wetlands, as well as natural areas containing salt marshes and maritime forests. Visitors can explore the various habitats found within Historic Corolla Park, including dunes accessible by boardwalks, maritime forests with live oaks and pine trees, salt marshes populated by wading birds and crabs, freshwater ponds teeming with wildlife, and beachfronts where guests can enjoy stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean.
The park has numerous amenities for visitors to make use of during their stay. Guests may take a leisurely stroll along one of many nature trails that wander through the park’s diverse habitats or kayak through its winding waterways. The park also offers activities such as bird watching, beachcombing and crabbing for those looking for something a bit more adventurous. The nearby Whalehead Club offers educational opportunities about local history and coastal ecology in addition to guided tours throughout Corolla’s protected lands.
History buffs will be enthralled by Historic Corolla Park's past: the land was once part of Currituck Plantation, a private estate bought in 1925 by Edward Knight Collins Jr., who then built an extravagant mansion reminiscent of Italian Renaissance architecture called Whalehead Club at Currituck Beach (now known as Historic Corolla Park). The property eventually became public in 1978 when it was purchased by the state to protect its historical significance and natural beauty from future development; it then opened as a state park in 1998.
Today, guests visiting Historic Corolla Park are encouraged to interact with nature while preserving its integrity: there are strict rules regarding beach access which are enforced to maintain nesting grounds for shorebirds like piping plover and least tern; additionally all pets must be leashed upon entering the park so as not to disturb any wildlife inhabiting its grounds. With these regulations set in place, everyone is able to enjoy this beautiful piece of Outer Banks history safely!
