The Corolla Wild Horse Fund is an important organization in the small North Carolina beach town of Corolla dedicated to the preservation and protection of the wild horses that roam freely throughout the area. Founded in 1984, this non-profit organization works tirelessly to provide a safe and healthy environment for the animals and to maintain their natural habitat in order to ensure their continued survival. The organization’s main goals are to protect, preserve and research these beautiful wild horses, as well as educate people about them.
The Corolla Wild Horse Fund employs a variety of techniques to achieve their goals. They have developed a network of dedicated volunteers who monitor horse activity, take photographs, collect data and report any concerns or issues regarding the horses. The organization also relies on donations from individuals, businesses and other organizations in order to fund its operations. This money goes towards educational programs, research projects, purchasing land for conservation efforts, maintaining trails and providing veterinary care when needed. In addition they offer tours which allow visitors an up close experience with the horses as well as providing much needed funds for their preservation efforts.
In order to help ensure the ongoing health of the herd, volunteers regularly inspect each horse on site using body condition score (BCS) methods. These experts will assess each animal’s physical fitness in terms of weight, skin condition and overall health – providing vital information which allows them to be monitored over time and identify any potential medical issues before they become serious problems. Additionally DNA testing is conducted on each horse in order to properly identify them later if necessary.
The Corolla Wild Horse Fund also works closely with local government officials in order for new laws or regulations that can help protect these majestic animals from being harmed by humans or becoming victims of poaching or development projects near their natural habitats – such as golf courses or housing complexes springing up around Corolla . Moreover they often join forces with other organizations like Nags Head Woods Ecological Preserve who share similar goals for conservation within Currituck County where Corolla resides.
By pooling resources together both groups have been instrumental in helping preserve more than 3,200 acres along Currituck Outer Banks – protecting essential land not only for wild horses but also many other species living here including birds, reptiles and mammals - helping create a safe haven where all species can thrive without interference from human activities or threats posed by development nearby. Ultimately it is thanks largely due to organizations like The Corolla Wild Horse Fund that wild horses still exist today so we can appreciate them roaming freely amongst our beaches while marveling at beauty of these amazing creatures that have been part of our landscape since Colonial times!
