The Florida Scrub-Jay Trail in Clermont is a unique, exciting and educational opportunity for locals and visitors alike. This five-mile trail meanders through the Lake Louisa State Park showcasing scrubby Flatwoods and sandhill habitats along the way. It's a great way to get close to nature and learn about the wildlife that inhabits this special corner of Central Florida.
The Florida Scrub-Jay Trail was established in 1987 by Friends of Lake Louisa State Park with the mission to protect the native scrub habitat, promote public appreciation of local plants, animals, natural communities and provide an opportunity for environmental education. The trail is part of the Great Florida Birding Trail which was created to showcase over 500 bird species found in this area.
Visitors will be able to observe diverse plant life such as live oak, sweetbay magnolia, Southern red cedar, longleaf pine, palmettos, saw palmetto and wildflowers like yellow coreopsis or blue lupine during different times of year. Along with these stunning flora you'll also see gopher tortoises and white-tailed deer among other native animals.
In addition to self-guided walking or biking tours visitors can join a park ranger led tour on Wednesdays at 9am and Saturdays at 10am to learn more about local history as well as ecology of this one-of-a-kind place. They can also explore the trails via a kayak eco tour hosted by local outfitters taking place monthly from October to April.
The trail consists of eight distinct stations where you can find information about local birds including the famous Florida scrub jay which is only found in this state's scrubby flatwoods habitat and nowhere else in the world! There are also interpretive displays highlighting geology, fire ecology and archaeological sites providing an even richer learning experience for visitors looking for knowledge beyond just admiring nature’s beauty.
