DuSable Bridge, Chicago, IL

The DuSable Bridge, located in Chicago, Illinois, is a steel truss bridge crossing the Chicago River. Constructed in 1927, it is the oldest bascule bridge in the city and one of only two such bridges remaining in operation. The bridge spans more than 1250 feet, connecting South Michigan Avenue to North Michigan Avenue. It carries US Highway 20 (Michigan Avenue), and serves as an important connection between downtown Chicago and its surrounding neighborhoods.

Named after Jean Baptiste Point du Sable, the first permanent non-native settler of what would later become Chicago, the DuSable Bridge was designed by J.E. Greiner Company and constructed by American Bridge Company. Built with a single deck for motor vehicles and trolley tracks, the structure includes two leaf bascule towers that can be raised at the touch of a button to allow ships to pass through from Lake Michigan into downtown Chicago’s river system.

The distinctive arched spans of the bridge are comprised of steel trusses connected by vertical suspender rods and cross braces at each joint point. The main spans measuring 565 feet long are supported by concrete abutment walls on both sides of the riverbank while approaches are reinforced with steel beams resting on piers set into the riverbed below.

In addition to providing access across the river, DuSable Bridge also provides stunning views upriver towards Lake Michigan as well as spectacular views downriver towards Navy Pier's iconic Ferris Wheel and along Michigan Avenue's Magnificent Mile . The bridge has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1978 and is considered one of Chicago's beloved landmarks.
