Centennial Wheel, Chicago, IL
The Centennial Wheel, located on Chicago's Navy Pier, is the city's largest observation wheel and one of the most iconic attractions in all of Chicago. Standing at an impressive 200 feet tall, the bright and colorful wheel originated in 1995 as part of the year-long celebration of Chicago's centennial. The observatory includes 42 climate-controlled gondolas, each complete with its own stereo system and a unique view of downtown Chicago and Lake Michigan. For visitors taking a ride on the Centennial Wheel, they will find that their journey starts with an amazing bird’s eye view of the cityscape before they ascend to even greater heights.
From atop the wheel, passengers can admire stunning views of the city skyline; including 360-degree panoramic views that stretch out across some 20 miles. On a clear day, riders may even be able to see four states: Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin and Indiana! At night, riders can take in a different kind of view when the wheel is lit up in vibrant colors that illuminate both Navy Pier and downtown Chicago. The entire experience lasts about 12 minutes.
In addition to being an iconic symbol for Chicago tourists, locals also appreciate the beauty provided by this incredible centerpiece. The Centennial Wheel has been featured prominently in numerous films such as Transformers 3: Dark Side of the Moon and Source Code starring Jake Gyllenhaal.
