Buckingham Fountain is a Chicago landmark and one of the most iconic attractions in the city. Located in Grant Park, it is one of the largest fountains in the world, standing at nearly 25-meters or 80-feet tall. Constructed out of Georgia pink marble, Buckingham Fountain was designed by Edward H. Bennett and dedicated on August 26th, 1927. It was built with funds donated by Kate Buckingham as a memorial to her brother Clarence. The fountain's design is based upon the Latona Basin at Versailles Palace near Paris, France.
The fountain centers around four sea horses that symbolize Lake Michigan's four bordering states: Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana and Michigan. They are surrounded by two sets of basin pools that include thirty-eight jets which shoot water 150 feet into the air. The outer basin has 104 jets and serves as the backdrop for larger shows that occur every hour. At night from 9pm to 11pm during summer months (May 1st - October 15th) Buckingham Fountain undergoes a majestic light show where its colored lights illuminate the sky while music fills the air.
The fountain remains an important part of Chicago's skyline and served as inspiration for multiple television shows including "Married with Children." It also remains an essential part of several local events such as Venetian Night, Polar Plunge and Taste of Chicago which draw thousands of people to Grant Park each year who come to admire its beauty and splendor.
