Charlotte’s oldest house, Charlotte, NC

Charlotte's oldest house, located in the Fourth Ward neighborhood of Charlotte, North Carolina, is an iconic landmark that has become a staple of the city. The house was built in 1856 by William White and is now known as the White-Goss House. It is currently the oldest standing residence in Charlotte and was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1972.

The house has been lovingly preserved over the years, with much of its original architecture intact. It stands at two stories tall and features a stunning Greek Revival style façade with fluted Doric columns and full-height porticos along each side. Its roof is supported by eight large chimneys that add a distinctive look to this classic home. Inside are several amazing features like 12-foot high ceilings, wood floors and plaster walls, as well as plenty of period furniture that dates back to when it was originally built.

The White-Goss House has also seen its fair share of local history over the years since it's construction in 1856. During the Civil War it saw Union troops march through its front yard and served as a temporary hospital for wounded soldiers after nearby battles had taken place. Later on it became a boardinghouse where some of the area’s first African American students were able to stay while attending school in Charlotte during Reconstruction.

In more recent times it has been owned by several different families who have continued to preserve its historic integrity while making some modern updates along the way. The house still stands today as an integral part of Charlotte's history and serves as a source of pride for local residents who treasure this important piece of their city's past.
