Carolina Raptor Center, Charlotte, NC

The Carolina Raptor Center in Charlotte, North Carolina is dedicated to the conservation of birds of prey. It offers educational programs, rehabilitation and release services for injured birds, and serves as a research center for studying raptors. In addition, the center also provides eco-tours designed to inspire people to appreciate and protect raptors in their natural habitats.

The Carolina Raptor Center has over 20 species of raptors which include hawks, owls, falcons, eagles, ospreys and vultures. The center rehabilitates hundreds of birds each year that are injured or orphaned in the wild. Many of these birds are permanent residents due to their disabilities that prevent them from returning back into the wild. Through its rehabilitation efforts, the Carolina Raptor Center works to ensure that each bird gets care that meets its specific needs.

The Carolina Raptor Center's education programs are designed to enhance public awareness of the important role raptors play in our environment and to foster appreciation for them as living symbols of our natural heritage. The center offers classes for all ages on topics such as: bird identification; anatomy and physiology; behavior; migration patterns; conservation issues; captive husbandry; and more. Visitors can explore the center's 350-acre sanctuary with a guided tour or independently with a trail map featuring educational points about native flora and fauna along the half-mile walking path around Lake Piney Point Pond.

In addition to its rescue and education efforts, The Carolina Raptor Center also takes part in important research projects related to raptor biology, physiology, ecology and behavior. These studies help develop better methods for protecting raptors while they are in their natural habitats and provide valuable baseline data used by state agencies when developing conservation policies related to birds of prey. This work helps support many organizations throughout North America who work towards conserving these majestic creatures across multiple ecosystems.

The Carolina Raptor Center is deeply committed to preserving wild populations of raptors through habitat protection initiatives such as protecting their nesting grounds from human encroachment and forestry practices that damage essential habitat features. Additionally, it has actively supported banning pesticides known to be toxic to many bird species including Bald Eagles, Red-tailed Hawks and Ospreys among others. By helping protect these animals we can ensure they continue playing an important role within our ecosystem both now and into the future.
