The Books Monument in Charlotte, North Carolina is an iconic monument honoring the city's literary history. Located in Marshall Park, at the corner of East 4th Street and North Tryon Street, this monument is a reminder of the importance of reading and books to the city.
The Books Monument was erected by the Charlotte Area Literary Council (CALC) in 2016. It features a 15-foot tall metal structure that stands atop an 11-foot high grassy mound which resembles a stack of books. Constructed from steel and aluminum, with 8,000 individual pieces cut by hand, it has become an integral part of the park’s landscape. The sculpture is illuminated by LED lighting from dusk until dawn, creating a striking silhouette against the night sky.
The Books Monument also serves as a physical representation of Charlotte’s commitment to literacy. As Charlotte Mayor Jennifer Roberts said during its dedication ceremony: “This monument will serve as a reminder that [reading] can open many doors for people and that our community embraces reading as a valued skill for life."
The CALC has partnered with local organizations such as United Way of Central Carolinas and Reading Partners-Charlotte to ensure children have access to resources to improve their literacy skills. In addition to its recognition of literature, the Books Monument also honors over one hundred authors with ties to Charlotte who have written works considered significant enough to be featured on plaques around its base. These authors include Pulitzer Prize winners Reynolds Price and Maxine Swalin; National Book Award recipient Betty Adcock; New York Times bestsellers Cassandra King Conroy and John Hart; Emmy Award winner Tom Wolfe; Newbery Medalist James Stevenson; and Charlotte native David Sedaris.
It's clear that this extraordinary monument will bring many visitors to Marshall Park each year, providing them with an awe-inspiring experience while simultaneously celebrating Charlotte's commitment to literacy and literature.
