The Iowa Mill in Breckenridge is a historical and iconic landmark of the city. Built in 1875, it was one of the earliest mills to be established in the area. It was originally established as a flour mill but eventually converted to a wooden box factory in 1905 due to the demand for such products at that time. The mill was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976, and has been carefully preserved ever since.
The Iowa Mill is situated on an eight-acre parcel of land along Water Street near downtown Breckenridge. The property consists of a two-story brick building with two wings, as well as several other buildings constructed over time to house various operations within the mill. The walls are built from thick red brick with large arched windows and white wood trim trimming each structure, giving them an instantly recognizable look that can be seen from miles away.
The interior of the Iowa Mill is just as beautiful and historic as its exterior, with its original wooden floors, handcrafted machinery and equipment still kept intact even after all these years. The first floor contains the grain room where wheat was stored and milled into flour before being sent upstairs to be packaged and shipped out. On the second floor there were multiple assembly lines where wooden boxes were created and packaged for shipment across North America; while at ground level there were also offices used by employees as well as storerooms used for storing materials and supplies related to the mill’s operations.
Today, The Iowa Mill continues to stand watch over Breckenridge’s lovely downtown streetscape while providing visitors with a unique glimpse into history through its carefully preserved interiors and exteriors. Visitors are invited inside to tour the facility which includes information about its past life in other industries such as timber harvesting and furniture making; as well as demonstrations on how flour was made during its heyday in Breckenridge throughout much of its 150 year history.
