The majestic sculpture of Ullr, the Norse god of snow and skiing, stands atop a mountain in Breckenridge, Colorado. It is a testament to the close relationship between the town and the sport of skiing that has been cultivated since the late 1800s. The spirit of Ullr is said to have blessed Breckenridge with its abundance of snowfall each winter, creating some of the best ski conditions in the world. The bronze sculpture stands at 10-feet tall and weighs over 600 pounds, illustrating Ullr’s strength and power as well as his importance to Breckenridge.
Ullr’s presence in this town is not to be taken lightly - he has been worshipped for centuries by skiers seeking his approval for good ski conditions. To honor him, locals erected this larger-than-life statue of him carving down a mountainside on wooden skis. Although plans for its construction had been in motion since 1959, it wasn't until 1973 that it was finally completed and placed atop Peak 9 at an altitude of 11,000 feet.
The statue itself is decorated with intricate details that further celebrate Ullr’s influence on Breckenridge’s culture and history. He dons traditional Nordic garb consisting of a fur trimmed cape with a large hood fit for a god, along with knee-high leather boots lined with fur trim and metal buckles. His right arm extends outwards while he holds his skis firmly in his left hand; meanwhile his face sports a broad smile as if he were anticipating an exciting day on the slopes ahead. The original sculpture was created by master sculptor Claire Gordon Potter who also crafted several other prominent works throughout the area including sculptures at Ten Mile Station located just below where Ullr stands today.
Ullr’s influence continues to extend far beyond just Breckenridge; each year locals from all over come together during the "Ullympics" to celebrate his many gifts such as archery tournaments, torchlight parades, ice skating competitions and even Viking battles! This event serves as a reminder that although we are no longer living in ancient times when people would have made offerings or sacrifices to please gods like Ullr, honoring him through recreational activities such as those found in modern day ski towns still carries much significance today. From its unique origin story all the way up until present day, the sculpture of Ullr continues to reflect the spirit of Breckenridge: one filled with joyous celebration and appreciation for all things skiing-related!
