Lomax Placer Mine in Breckenridge is a captivating historical landmark that offers visitors an intriguing glimpse into the past. Located about 8 miles northwest of downtown Breckenridge, the mine itself has been around for over 140 years and stands as a reminder of our state's rich mining heritage.
The original claim for the Lomax Placer Mine was made by Joseph Bramlette in 1877. As he worked his claim, he discovered gold in addition to quartz chunks that were peppered with small flakes of gold. The Lomax Placer Mine quickly became one of the most productive gold mines in Summit County at that time and grew to have over 200 claims during its peak.
The mine's operations changed hands several times throughout its history, but it remained relatively successful until the early twentieth century when most of the veins had been depleted and it eventually closed. In 1982, the mine was added to the National Register of Historic Places due to its significant role in mining history as well as its impact on local culture and economy.
Today, visitors can explore the old mining site and surrounding area on tours led by knowledgeable guides who will share stories about what life was like back then. Additionally, there are some equipment and tools still left at the mine which offer insight into how miners once operated. Some areas within close proximity include abandoned cabins, log buildings, rock piles from blasting operations, old shafts and adits–all excellent examples of Colorado’s famous Gold Mining Architecture.
The Lomax Placer Mine also serves as an educational resource for students, as schools often take field trips here to learn more about Colorado’s fascinating past with regards to gold mining and related activities.
