Alexander Park Branson was born on October 1, 1859, in Randolph County, Missouri. He was the second of three sons born to James and Margaret (née Park) Branson. His father served in the Missouri House of Representatives from 1854 to 1858 and was a colonel in the Union Army during the American Civil War. His grandfather, Alexander Branson, was a pioneer settler of Randolph County and served in the state legislature from 1820 to 1822.
Branson attended public schools in Missouri and Illinois before enrolling at Princeton University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1880. He then studied law at Harvard University and was admitted to the bar in 1883.
Branson began his legal career in St. Louis, Missouri, where he worked for several years as an attorney for the Wabash Railroad. He then moved to Kansas City, Missouri, and established his own law practice. In 1893, he was appointed by President Grover Cleveland to serve as United States Attorney for the Western District of Missouri, a position he held until 1897.
In 1898, Branson was elected to the Missouri State Senate. He served one term before being appointed by Governor Lon Stephens to serve as a judge on the Missouri Court of Appeals for the Western District, a position he held from 1899 to 1903.
