In May of 1863, the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment marched down Boston's Tremont Street to the Cheers of a large and enthusiastic crowd. The regiment, which was made up of African American soldiers, was headed for combat in the Civil War. The 54th Massachusetts was one of the first official African American units in the Union army, and its members were eager to prove their worth as soldiers.
The 54th Massachusetts saw action in a number of major battles, including the assault on Fort Wagner in South Carolina. The fort was defended by Confederate troops, who were determined to keep the African American soldiers from taking it. The 54th Massachusetts fought bravely, but was ultimately unsuccessful in their attack.
The regiment continued to fight in other battles throughout the war, and eventually returned to Boston in 1865. They were given a hero's welcome, and their courageous efforts during the war had earned them the respect of their fellow citizens.
Today, the Shaw & 54th Regiment Memorial in Boston commemorates the brave men of the 54th Massachusetts. The monument is located on Tremont Street, near where the regiment first marched off to war. It is a fitting tribute to these courageous soldiers, who helped to change the course of history.
