In 1846, ether was used for the first time as an anesthetic during surgery. The patient, Gilbert Abbott, received ether during a surgery to remove a tumor from his neck. Ether quickly became popular as an anesthetic and was used during many surgeries in the years that followed.
In 1852, a group of Boston doctors formed the Ether Monument Association to build a monument to commemorate the use of ether during surgery. The monument was designed by sculptor Martin Milmore and was unveiled in 1866. The monument consists of a granite base with a bronze statue of a woman on top. The woman represents anesthesia and is holding a bottle of ether in her hand.
The monument is located in Boston Common, near the site of the first public demonstration of ether anesthesia in 1846.
