The African Meeting House, located in Boston’s historic Beacon Hill neighborhood, was built in 1806 as the first African church in New England. It served as an important gathering place for the city’s black community throughout the 19th century. In the 20th century, the building was adapted for use as a Museum Of African American History , and today it is a National Historic Landmark and one of the most visited sites on the Freedom Trail.
The African Meeting House is a significant site in American history, not only because of its role in the abolition movement, but also because it is one of the few remaining structures that attest to the early presence of free blacks in New England. The building is a reminder of the significant contributions made by African Americans to the city of Boston and to the nation as a whole.
