Walter Beach Austin was a prolific American composer and arranger. He lived in the 20th century and wrote music for jazz ensembles, as well as orchestral works. His style is often described as modern harmonic concept-oriented music with sometimes avant garde tendencies, which usually featured off-beat phrasing and angular melodies. Some of his better known compositions are "UCLA Bruin March" and "Strawberry Jam", commissioned by the National Endowment for the Arts in 1975. Austin was an active performer himself; he frequently performed in clubs around Los Angeles during the 1950s with Art Pepper, Jack Montrose, Jim Hall and other players of prominence in the jazz world. After retiring from performing he moved to Dallas, where he continued to compose until his death at age 72 in 2012.
