The Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum in Atlanta, Georgia honors the life of the 39th President of the United States, Jimmy Carter. Founded in 1986, it is located on a 30-acre site adjacent to Emory University and offers visitors an opportunity to explore the full scope of his presidency. Through multimedia displays, interactive exhibits, documents related to key events during his presidency, and permanent collections of presidential artifacts such as gifts from foreign dignitaries, campaigns memorabilia, and other materials related to his presidency and post-presidency activities, visitors are able to gain an intimate understanding of what made him one of the most admired presidents in US history.
The museum's permanent exhibitions feature thousands of historical photographs and documents related to his presidency (1977–1981), including letters from citizens as well as leaders from around the world that detail their appreciation for his leadership. One exhibit showcases a replica Oval Office where President Carter presided over important matters relating to US politics and international relations. Additionally, there are interactive displays that highlight different aspects of President Carter’s legacy; one example is a display dedicated to human rights and arms control efforts during his tenure.
The library also houses personal papers tracing back throughout President Carter’s entire life including childhood diaries and papers related to his education at Georgia Southwestern College and Union Theological Seminary as well as documents related to his pre-political business career in agriculture. There are also letters he exchanged with world leaders such as Anwar Sadat who visited him at the White House during the Camp David Accords Summit in 1978. Other exhibits focus on military service records or President Carter’s later career activities such as Habitat for Humanity work or Nobel Peace Prize efforts.
The Jimmy Carter Presidential Library & Museum strives to provide important educational resources about democracy by organizing workshops for students learning about American history or presidential elections along with special lectures targeted toward adult audiences exploring varied topics like human rights issues abroad or immigration reform domestically. Additionally this institution serves as an important repository for researchers interested in examining primary sources relevant to US history since 1977 when President Carter was inaugurated into office until today with consideration for preserving records reflective of future eras yet ahead.
