Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Park in Atlanta is an important way for people today to learn about the life and legacy of one of the most influential civil rights leaders in American history. The park covers 35 acres and includes a number of sites related to King’s life and his work in the civil rights movement. Visitors can explore King’s birth home and visit several buildings associated with the civil rights movement, including his Ebenezer Baptist Church, where he was baptized and served as pastor for eight years. The church basement also housed his first office for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). As visitors move around the grounds, they will see memorials dedicated to King’s memory. There is a stone sculpture titled “Stone of Hope” that stands at the entryway to Freedom Hall Complex, which houses many artifacts related to King’s life. A reflecting pool, a replica of King's pulpit at Ebenezer Baptist Church, and a statue of him delivering his famous "I Have A Dream" speech are among other points of interest on-site.
The park is open daily offering free admission. In addition to the regular tours that are available year-round, there are special programs such as guided walking tours throughout Freedom Park that focus on more specific aspects of Dr. King's life and legacy. These include visits to his tomb in South View Cemetery; explorations into nonviolence education; lectures about African American history; talks about civil rights progress; music workshops featuring traditional spirituals; living history performances by character reenactors; as well as interactive activities for children such as art projects or storytelling sessions about Dr. King's legacy. Each tour provides visitors with an engaging opportunity to gain greater insight into this inspirational leader's fight for justice and equality through peaceful means.
