The Atlanta History Center is one of the most popular destinations in Atlanta, Georgia. Founded in 1926, the center seeks to preserve and share the history and culture of Atlanta and the Southeast. Located in Buckhead, it features a variety of exhibits, gardens, and activities that provide visitors with an immersive experience into the city’s past.
The museum houses some 33 million artifacts which include documents, photographs, film, art objects, furniture pieces and other items related to Atlanta's history as well as the American South. The exhibits chronicle different facets of Atlanta’s story from its founding up through today. Some of the highlights include an interactive gallery exploring historic neighborhoods; a film about life during Reconstruction; an exhibit on slavery; and collections related to civil rights leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr., John Lewis and Ralph Abernathy.
In addition to its galleries and exhibits, The Atlanta History Center also offers educational programs for all ages such as guided tours, lectures and workshops. Classes are available for children aged three years old and above ranging from after-school programs to summer camps. Additionally, there are special events such as festivals that celebrate cultural diversity or commemorate special occasions throughout the year.
The grounds of the center also offer plenty of entertainment options. Visitors can take a stroll through one of its eight themed gardens or explore one of two historic houses located on-site - both dating back to before 1920 - and view their period furnishings while learning about domestic life during those times. There's also a research library where visitors can access primary sources related to Atlanta's history such as artifacts from World War I or diaries of former slaves held at local plantations. Finally, there's a café where you can purchase light meals or snacks while enjoying lovely views over Downtown Atlanta from the terrace outside!
