The Asheville Tourists are a minor league baseball team located in Asheville, North Carolina. Founded in 1897, the team is an affiliate of the Colorado Rockies and plays in the Class A South Atlantic League. The Tourists home field is McCormick Field, which has been the home of the Tourists since 1924 and is known for having one of the most picturesque backdrops in Minor League Baseball. It sits atop a hill overlooking downtown Asheville and offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains.
The Tourists have a long history as one of Minor League Baseball’s most successful franchises, capturing eight South Atlantic League titles over their 120-plus years. While they haven't won any championships recently, they remain one of the most beloved teams in the league thanks to their loyal fan base and exciting style of play.
The team's mascot is Ted E.Tourist, a costumed bear character that can often be seen dancing to player walk-up music during games or interacting with fans prior to first pitch. He was created by legendary local artist Don Pedi as part of a community art project commissioned by the City of Asheville back in 1992 and has become an iconic figure in both town and team culture alike.
In addition to fielding a competitive team each season, the Tourists are also committed to giving back to their community through outreach programs like their annual "Strike Out Hunger" game which encourages fans to donate canned goods for local families in need throughout Western North Carolina. They also host numerous other charitable events throughout each season, such as their "Fill The Seats" program which donates free tickets for underprivileged children from local schools and organizations to attend games at McCormick Field.
