The Kit Carson Home & Museum in Angel Fire, New Mexico is one of the most revered and visited sites in the region. It stands as a tribute to the life and legacy of Christopher "Kit" Carson, who was an American frontiersman, explorer, Indian agent, legendary mountain man, and Civil War officer.
The museum is located right next to the historic Kit Carson home. The house, which was built in 1868 by the Carson family's son-in-law Lawrence Talbot, is surrounded by high earthen walls – giving it a feel of a classic western fort. Inside the home are artifacts and furnishings that have been preserved from when Kit Carson lived there with his family during his later years. There are also relics from more than 100 years of Colorado history on display throughout the museum.
Numerous stories are told inside the museum about Kit’s life that help visitors gain an even greater appreciation for what he went through during his adventures out West. His story is intertwined with those of some of America’s most notable characters like Wild Bill Hickok, George Armstrong Custer, Jim Bridger and Buffalo Bill Cody.
The museum also features exhibits highlighting early American history as well as Native American culture before European settlement began in this country. This includes information about Spanish exploration and colonization in New Mexico as well as displays about Navajo culture and customs during the late 1800s.
Visitors will also find plenty to do outdoors at Angel Fire Resort near the museum complex where they can enjoy activities such as skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, horseback riding and more!
