Space Mountain in Anaheim is an iconic roller coaster ride at Disneyland that opened to the public in 1977. With its iconic mountain design, Space Mountain is one of the park’s most recognizable landmarks. It was designed by Walt Disney Imagineering as part of the park’s expansion in anticipation of its 25th anniversary. The ride itself takes place inside a replica of a spaceship, with riders racing through stars and galaxies during the two-minute journey.
The tracks for this steel coaster are shaped like a cloverleaf and take guests up and around 1,300 feet of track at speeds up to 28 miles per hour. Riders experience several launches and drops, twists, turns, and some exciting dips throughout their journey. The coaster has elements such as loops that are meant to simulate weightlessness as they speed through the darkness.
Space Mountain has been through several changes over the years since its opening in 1977. In 2003, it was updated with new effects and lighting technology to bring it into modern times. Then, in 2015, Disney announced plans to expand Space Mountain even further by adding a nearby outdoor play area called Starcade that would feature interactive gaming experiences for guests of all ages and abilities. This major renovation included new lighting systems on the track that could project colorful patterns onto passing cars as well as exterior wraps that illustrated galaxies from space.
In addition to being an exhilarating ride for thrill-seekers and families alike, Space Mountain offers spectacular views of Tomorrowland from its peak point high above the park. As riders reach the top before their descent into darkness, they can get a bird's eye view of many popular attractions including Autopia, Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters , Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage, Matterhorn Bobsleds, Star Tours–The Adventures Continue, Mickey's Toontown Fairway Miniature Golf Course & Monsters Inc., Mike & Sulley To The Rescue!, Goofy's Sky School Roller Coaster Ride & more! With such amazing sights to behold along your journey aboard this futuristic attraction you won't want your ride to ever end!
