Welcome to Abbottstown, Pennsylvania! Abbottstown is a small borough located in Adams County, with a population of 1,022 according to the 2020 census. But what makes this little town so special? Let’s take a look at the history of Abbottstown and find out. 

Early History of Abbottstown 
The earliest settlers in the area were German immigrants who arrived in the late 1700s. The land was originally part of Penn Township but was officially established as its own borough in 1867. The name “Abbottstown” comes from Thomas and James Abbott, two brothers who owned most of the land in the area when it was established as a borough. In 1888, Abbottstown received its first post office and railroad station and quickly became an important hub for trade and transportation. 

Historical Landmarks 
Today, there are still plenty of remnants from Abbottstown’s past for visitors to explore. One such landmark is the historic Hoffer House, which dates back to 1790 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The house has been maintained by local historians over the years and can be viewed through guided tours offered by local historians. Another popular attraction is Heritage Park, which features several memorial plaques honoring veterans from World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam and more recent conflicts.  
                                                                                                            
Community Events 
In addition to its rich history, Abbottstown also boasts numerous festivals throughout the year that bring residents together for fun activities like picnics in Heritage Park or shopping at local farmer’s markets. Every May since 2010, locals have gathered together for “Abbottstown Days” – an annual celebration that includes live music performances from local bands, food vendors offering classic comfort dishes like funnel cakes and ice cream sundaes as well as carnival rides for children (and adults!) alike! It’s a great way to experience all that this quaint little town has to offer!
