Hollywood Sign

The Hollywood Sign is an iconic symbol of American culture, a beacon of hope and inspiration for people all over the world. Located in Los Angeles, California, this monumental sign has been featured in numerous movies and television shows, and it serves as a reminder of the power of dreams. Let’s take a closer look at the history and significance of this incredible landmark.

History of the Hollywood Sign

The Hollywood Sign was originally commissioned in 1923 by Los Angeles Times publisher Harry Chandler as a real estate ad for his upscale neighborhood - “Hollywoodland”. It was constructed out of wood and sheet metal with each letter standing approximately 30 feet tall and stretching 425 feet across the hillsides of Mount Lee above Hollywood.

In 1949, the "land" portion was removed to emphasize Hollywood as an area rather than just an advertisement. Over time, the sign became an international symbol for glamour and fame associated with Los Angeles' film industry. In 1978, the sign underwent extensive restoration funded by private donors including Hugh Hefner who raised more than $250,000 to preserve it. Afterward, ownership was transferred to the City Of Los Angeles Department Of Recreation And Parks who have maintained it ever since.
