About Congress Research Service:

First and foremost, the library is serving congress. The congressional research service (CRS), a department inside the government, works solely for the legislature. To assist Congress in its legislative, oversight, and representation activities, the CRS provides impartial, nonpartisan information, analysis, and information.

The legislative reference service was established to create any necessary index, digests, or compilation of the legislation for congress, but it quickly evolved into a specialized reference organization for information exchange and research.

Every year, the service responds to more than 500,000 requests for research. Its staff prepares legislative queries and responds to those inquiries at every level of the legislative process and in an interdisciplinary manner with fast, accurate information and assessments.

The CRS head manages and coordinates the work of seven research departments, which cover a variety of social policy topics and disciplines, with the help of management staff.
